Demolition of former Notre Dame Catholic School at 142 Rosemount Ave. in Kitchener, which was closed in June 2010, is expected to be completed this week.
Kitchener councillor Scott Davey confirmed the school property has been sold to the Cortes JL Architect Corporation of Waterloo and it is expected that the site will be used to construct new single family and semi-detached homes.
To date, the city has not received a site plan for the property however, Davey said, "People in the area may be relieved to know that there are no plans for any high rise development there."
According to local zoning laws, any former school site is automatically re-zoned as residential once a sale takes place.
"We expect a site plan will be submitted soon. My understanding is that they want to move fairly quickly to develop the property," Davey said.
As with all school properties, Notre Dame School was also a popular recreation area that included two baseball diamonds and tennis courts as well as a playground.
Davey said city staff is currently looking to perhaps purchasing more than the five percent parkland dedication that is required by the city for all new residential development.
"I do feel bad for the people in the area because they are used to having the school property there to use. We will be exploring the city's options," Davey said.
