This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Waterloo Region Newcomers & Friends Club.

Formed in 1983, the Newcomers & Friends Club is a non-denominational, non-profit, social organization, which welcomes women of all ages who are new to the Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge areas.

Its mandate is to provide members with opportunities for social interaction with other women who are also new to the region through shared interests and activities.

The club celebrated its 30th anniversary with dinner and fashion show at Rockway Golf Course on June 5. Featuring fashions from Smart Centres Store in Cambridge, the event was open to friends and past club members.

Club members meet monthly during a social evening that includes speakers. It also has several interest group activities, which provide fun and friendship. Most club events take place during the day, but there are also groups that meet in the evening and on weekends.

The club offers an art group, book club, bridge, coffee klatch, euchre, games, golf group, lunch bunch, movie nights, photography club and wine social.

Members meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm (September to June), usually at Olivet United Church in Kitchener.

In Canada, Newcomers Clubs began in 1960 when a newcomer to Calgary from Texas, Kay Dant, started the Calgary Newcomers Club with the assistance of the American Association of Newcomers Clubs.

In 1961 the club was officially incorporated and based on similar clubs that operated in the U.S. It was the first of over 60 Newcomers clubs currently operating in Canada.

The National Newcomers Council of Canada (NNCC) was formed in 1978 to serve as an advisory body for member clubs, to facilitate the exchange of ideas between clubs and to assist women interested in forming new clubs.
