It’s important to remember where you came from.
The Mennonite Savings and Credit Union (MSCU) showed that it believes this is true when it announced November 4 that is is donating $500,000 toward Mennonite Central Committee Ontario’s (MCCO) building campaign.
The Mennonite Savings and Credit Union started in the MCCO building on Kent Avenue 47 years ago, according to the credit union’s Marketing Manager Frank Chilsholm. It still operates a Kitchener branch out of the building.
“It’s nice to be giving this gift back,” Chisholm said.
The MCCO recently acquired vacant school board land adjacent to their office. With a larger property, the MCCO will construct an entirely new, two-storey building totalling 51,000 square feet on its current 50 Kent Avenue location. The $12 million dollar project is expected to be completed in October 2013, with demolition and ground-breaking beginning in mid-2012.
Features of the new building include a welcoming and interactive atrium, Kent and Charles street exposure, close proximity to public transit, and a commitment to sustainable design.
Several organizations will continue to share space in the new building, including MSCU, Mennonite Foundation of Canada, Mennonite World Conference, and Mennonite Church Eastern Canada. These partners will work with the MCCO and the KW Thrift Shops to create a vibrant Anabaptist community.
“MSCU’s gift to our building campaign will help us realize our dream of greater impact and capacity locally and around the world. We are re-visioning our current head office to create a much more active and welcoming centre where people touch, taste, and participate in MCC’s practical response to the needs of the world,” said Rick Cober Bauman, executive director of MCCO.
The MCCO plans to close their current overcrowded thrift shops in Kitchener and Waterloo, and open one large and innovative shop in the new Kent building.
“Investing in thrift is investing in the work of MCC,” Cober Bauman said.
Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is a worldwide ministry of Anabaptist churches, and it works in over 60 countries around the world in the areas of disaster relief, sustainable community development and justice and peace-building.
