southwest Kitchener neighbourhood

As her 16 years as a Kitchener councillor draws to a close, Kelly Galloway-Sealock continues to witness the fruits of her labour.
For most of her time as the Ward 5 councillor, she has been working with city staff and city council to bring a community centre to the fast-growing Huron neighbourhood. It held its official grand opening on October 1.
“It’s an unbelievable day,” Galloway-Sealock said at the ribbon cutting ceremony. “It’s great to see this all come together.”
The Huron Community Centre is home to a gym, two
program rooms and a shared entrance with EarlyON
Child and Family Centre. It is attached to Oak Creek
Public School at 80 Tartan Avenue.
The community centre has two public access computers, and a printer for public use, which requires paying per page. The computers are available when the centre is open. Residents can also use their own phone, tablet or computer with the centre’s free Wi-Fi. Choose the “Kitchener Public WiFi” network and follow the instructions.
The grand opening included the ribbon cutting, music, food trucks, Zumba lessons, program demonstrations, outdoor games and tours of the community centre.
Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic credited Galloway-Sealock for her contributions to getting the community centre in the Huron neighbourhood.
“She has been a champion for the growth in southwest Kitchener,” Vrbanovic said.
Programming at the new community centre is run by the Huron Community Association (HCA).
“The Huron Community Association was formed in 2014 by a passionate group of neighbours with one goal in mind - to create a safe, vibrant and active community,” said HCA President Jen Hoffman-Bailey at the opening.
She joked that the group was so passionate “not even a pandemic could stop us.”
Prior to the opening of the community centre, the HCA held its programs in spaces at nearby schools and churches. Now that it has its own space, the group plans to increase its programming.
There are nine members of the HCA and they are always looking for new volunteers. Registration is open for a wide range of affordable classes and activities being offered at the centre for kids, teens, and adults of all ages.
The Huron Community Centre is open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. It is closed on Sundays.
