Working group ready to forward boundary change proposal to trustees

A working group that has been studying boundary changes for Forest Hill and Trillium Public Schools has come up with a proposal to present to the Waterloo Region District School Board trustees.
The proposal recommends that about 33 children who live on Mowat Boulevard, Leacrest Court and part of Chandler Drive move from Forest Hill to Trillium in September of 2012.
Senior Planner Lauren Manske has held two public meetings to discuss the proposed changes. The working group is made up of school board staff and representatives from the community.
At the present time, Forest Hill School exceeds its capacity of students, and Trillium School is under capacity. Both schools are in    established neighbourhoods where few new homes are built.
Full day junior kindergarten has been implemented at Forest Hill School and will be added to Trillium in 2012. This program requires more classroom space because the kindergarten students need their room for a whole day rather than a half day.
The proposal does not require any additional transportation costs, as the students are within walking distance of Trillium.
Manske said that affected students that are currently in grade 5 will have the opportunity to finish their final elementary school year at Forest Hill if they wish.
Following grade six, students attending Forest Hill school are split between Queensmount Senior Public and Laurentian Senior Public for grades 7 and 8. All of Trillium’s students attend Laurention. Manske said this was considered when the proposal was drawn up.
The 33 students who they propose move to Trillium are in the current Forest Hill School neighbourhood that attends Laurention for grades 7 and 8. Therefore, those students always split from other Forest Hill students when they reach grade 7.
The proposal also takes into account the number of English as a Second Language learners at both schools and divides that population so that they can get the support they need at each school.
“The feedback we’ve gotten is very positive,” Manske said.
The proposal will be presented to the trustees in January, with the hope that it will be approved in time for Kindergarten registration in February 2012.
