Twice a week, the field behind the Victoria Hills Community Centre in Kitchener turns into a park called Lichwood Grove.

Costumed live action role-players (LARP) take medieval video games to the next level, by physically acting them out, rather than relying on their game controllers.

“Live action lets you scratch that fantasy itch, and be active as well,” said Kendall Patterson, the Champion of the local Amtgard LARP group.

According to its website, Amtgard is a world-wide organization dedicated to medieval and fantasy
combat sports and recreation. It uses padded
weapons, fantasy and authentic clothing, and imagination to immerse players in a world of heroic combat, quests, and crafts.

Patterson said their are many LARP groups, and some use other rules rather than the Amtgard ones. Some groups rely more on the role-playing aspect, while others more on combat.

Lichwood Grove is one of about 10 groups from across Ontario.

Patterson said their numbers fluctuate with the weather. But the weather is one thing that doesn’t stop them from playing.

“We usually go rain or shine,” Patterson said. “I remember playing once in a blizzard.”

The Sheriff of Lichwood Grove, Jeff Lawrence, said the group brings out men and women. They like players to be above 14 years of age. Although the weapons are made of foam, they want to make sure no one gets hurt.

Lawrence drives from Brantford each week to take part.

Patterson played video games online before trying LARP. He likes both, but says LARPing brings out a “true sense of community.” He has been helping to organize the local games for about two years.

“I’m proud of the community we’ve been able to build,” Patterson said. “It’s very supportive.”
